LACING UP WITH JASON KAY – IBEW Journeyman of the Year

 

Inspiration and Purpose

Jason's inspiration stems from his desire to be part of an organization that helps men and women realize their true potential. He finds his purpose in watching individuals grow and develop professionally and personally. "Being able to be part of an organization that provides Men and Women rewarding ways to find their true potential. And to watch them grow as people," he shares. This drives him to contribute actively to his community and his union.

Career Beginnings

Jason's journey into the electrical field began during his second year of studying Mechanical Design. Realizing that sitting at a drafting table wasn't for him, he took a job in a warehouse for a local electrical contractor. After two years, he embarked on an Electrical Apprenticeship with IBEW Local 388 in Stevens Point, WI. This decision marked the start of a fulfilling career in the electrical industry.

Overcoming Challenges

Throughout his career, Jason has faced plenty of challenges, especially in adapting to ever-changing work environments and supporting new apprentices as they navigate their personal struggles. His ability to stand by and mentor others has been the key to his success and a testament to his leadership.

Jason's advice for anyone interested in the electrical field is simple: "We really get out of anything the amount that you put in." He believes that a job can turn into a career, and eventually, a lifestyle and family. "When we are younger, we look at a job as simply as that. After some time, this job becomes a career. Next thing that happens is that, this career becomes a lifestyle, and family," he advises. This perspective encourages aspiring electricians to invest wholeheartedly in their work and embrace the journey.

IBEW Journeyman Mentor of the Year

Being awarded the IBEW Journeyman Mentor of the Year is a significant honor for Jason. He attributes his success to his local union's collective efforts and support. Jason believes that overcoming challenges requires effort and thoughtful solutions, and he has dedicated himself to providing the necessary support to his colleagues and apprentices. "I have realized that all of us need some sort of support to push through the many challenges that face us, in our personal lives, school, and at work".

Commitment to American-Made Products

Jason also emphasizes the importance of supporting American-made products. He states, "The Brothers and Sisters are very influential with the young talent that enters our trade. We try to instill a loyalty for American-made products. If, as a worker in the United States or Canada, we should use and purchase as many American-made products and services. This should in time reflect with the industries and services that remain loyal to the American Worker."

When it comes to work gear, Jason has a clear preference for Thorogood boots. He alternates between two pairs: Style #804-4200 and Style #804-4331. The 804-4200 is his favorite due to its comfort and lightweight design. Jason appreciates the arch support and durability of Thorogood boots, which have been a reliable choice throughout his career.
